week one: high hopes, low blood sugar

I get my first fresh box delivery tonight. I am eagerly awaiting the end of the work day, and not just because I plan to watch several episodes of Dog Whisperer and Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives in my pyjamas this evening. No sir. I am eagerly awaiting the end of the day because between 6 and 9 PM tonight, my very first fresh box of organic produce will be delivered!

Per FOOD's website, my Organic Fresh Box contents for the week of January 27, 2010 will be:

Fruit:
1/2 lb. BC Fuji apples
1 lb. fair trade bananas
1 avocado
1 ruby pink grapefruit
1 kiwi
1 Navel orange
2 Bosc pears
1 mango

Vegetables:
1 romaine lettuce heart
> 1/2 lb. green beans
1 cauliflower
1 cucumber
1 red chard
1 bunch green onions

Interesting. I've never cooked red chard before, and I have limited experience with fresh mangos. Epicurious, here I come!

I promise I'll try to take pictures of my Rubbermaid cornucopia when it arrives. Blogs are pointless unless they contain fun things like PHOTOS and FLOW CHARTS.

  1. With regards to the mango, know that it will almost certainly be delivered very, very underripe. They'll show up all pretty and red...which is not ripe at all, and if you try to eat it like that, you will become convinced you hate mango.

    Yeah, okay, I did that.

Anyhow, they're ripe when they're sort of squishy (like, squishy like a ripe avocado!) and they're usually mostly yellow/orange by that point.

Also, because what the hell, right, my favorite mango thing is to make mango salsa and have it on chicken or tofu (or fish, if you're a fish-eater). Dice a mango, add some chopped red onion and chopped red pepper, and chopped cucumber. Make a dressing of lime, garlic, cumin, sugar, and a little oil, and let it sit for an hour before you eat it. OMG, so good.

  2. No, that's exactly what I did, too! The first time I had fresh mango, I was at a friend's house, and I guess it was either underripe or overripe because it was gritty and tasted bad and was generally an unpleasant thing to be eating. But I've enjoyed the flavour of mango in other things so much, so I was confused about whether or not I really liked it. Turns out it's a question of ripeness. IMAGINE THAT.

That sounds incredibly good. Roommate objects to meat & fruit combos, but I wonder if she would be open to that.

  3. My general experience is that if they're overripe, they're slightly mushy and very, very sweet and perfumey, almost sickly sweet. Underripe is...just...no.

    You're pretty!
